Recognizing and Building Communication Rights

Sierra Leone

In Sierra Leone, women have been silent for the most part and there is a need for both men and women to understand communication as a right, so as to foster greater participation in the country’s democratic process. Through this project, IRN proposes to advance women’s communication rights throughout the country by encouraging their mobilization in the radio landscape and strengthening female reporters’ and producers’ skills. Two individuals from each of IRN’s 22 member radio stations will be trained on the diversification of voice on the radio, mainstreaming gender and focusing messages on human rights, and collaborating as a cohesive radio network to implement related jingles and radio spots. Female radio participants will receive special training along with other members of women’s networks in the area, focusing on skill building and addressing the challenge of promoting a female voice in the public arena.
