WACC is pleased to announce an agreement established in June 2009 with the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) to work together on the promotion of gender equality in journalistic practice.  Both WACC and the IFJ believe strongly in the need for gender equality in the work of media and are committed to the promotion of ethical and quality journalism that will help to build a culture of respect for gender rights in society at large. Both organisations see the promotion of gender equality in journalistic practice as paramount, and in June 2009 agreed to cooperate in this key area of joint concern.
Lavinia Mohr, Director of Programmes, WACC with Jim Boumelha, President, IFJ

In reaching the agreement, the IFJ acknowledged the importance of WACC’s Global Media Monitoring Project research that it has used in its work, and WACC recognised the value of the IFJ’s publications on gender equality in journalism that it has promoted and shared among its gender and media network.

The cooperation agreement covers the research and production  of two publications addressing gender equality in journalistic practice.  The first is material aimed at professional improvement of journalistic practice on gender focussing on ethical guidelines for fair and balanced representation of gender in journalism with specific advice for media professionals on particularly sensitive topics.  This material will draw upon the findings of WACC research and IFJ standards and guidelines already developed in this field and recognised within the IFJ’s Ethical Journalism Initiative programme. The second publication is a tool kit for journalists and their unions and associations who are interested in promoting gender equality in journalism. The toolkit will focus on the adoption and implementation by media of a comprehensive policy on gender equality in journalistic practice; editorial guidelines, targets and timelines, and mechanisms to monitor progress inside media houses; the establishment of accountability procedures, both internally and externally, on implementation of policies on gender-balanced journalistic practices; models of policies on gender equality in journalistic practice and proposals for implementation of such policies; and material for raising awareness through training and seminars on gender issues.

The cooperation agreement was reached following the IFJ’s international conference on Gender and Ethics: Gender Equality in the Newsroom held in Brussels 30 -31 May 2009.  The working sessions of the conference began with a presentation by Lavinia Mohr, WACC’s Director of Programmes, on the 2006 Who Makes the News? report of the Global Media Monitoring Project on the representation of women and men in the news around the world.

The IFJ is the world's largest organisation of journalists representing around 600,000 members in more than 100 countries.  It recently published a handbook entitled “Getting the Balance Right: Gender Equality in Journalism”. The handbook which encourages every newsroom, every media house and every journalists union to eliminate gender discrimination is available in English, Spanish and French.
