…WACC supports project on awareness-building about democracy and peace for young people in the Democratic Republic of Congo

By Gisèle Langendries, WACC

Following a long period of repeated armed conflict, the Democratic Republic of Congo is going through a democratic process which has led to the legislative and presidential elections. And yet women continue to suffer all kinds of injustices, despite the efforts of the country’s public authorities. Young people are equally marginalized. The country’s reconstruction process is undermined by high unemployment, an impoverished educational system and an absence of organized activities for young people, which has given them feelings of isolation and alienation.

MIFED – the International Women’s Movement for Democracy and Development – addresses the issue of raising awareness of the need to participate as citizens in the process of reconstructing the country and consolidating peace among the Congolese population, especially young people.

The production and broadcast of a series of 15 television programmes about peace, democracy and citizens’ participation; the identification of different groups to participate in televised discussion forums; the awareness-building sessions in schools about civic practice and the creation of discussion groups in schools and universities were carried out by MIFED with the aim of offering young people a space for self-improvement through training and self-expression through the medium of communication.

With the support of WACC, the project was successful in contributing to a behaviour change through the training and the dissemination of information to the population, in general, and to young people, in particular. The central themes for discussion  included: the consolidation of peace, affirming rights while respecting the rights of others, the value of work, education, and respect for the environment.

As a result of the awareness-building, young people are now better able to participate in the consolidation of peace process in the DRC.
