Burundi After years of conflict, Burundi, in the Great Lakes region of Africa, is on the road to democracy and is making sustained efforts to emerge from the legacy of violence. It is in the process of establishing a Truth and Reconciliation Commission for which the population needs to be prepared in terms of bearing witness and telling the truth. This project of the Peace Centre Giramahoro will help communities to break their silence and contribute to non-violent transformation of Burundi. It will teach communities to use communication effectively by means of workshops that will examine the causes of political and social problems, to reach a consensus about ways forward, and to seek appropriate solutions by working together. The Peace Centre works with many different communities in Burundi, including the churches, to understand the disagreements and misunderstandings that led to conflict in the past and to find ways of avoiding a renewal of conflict in the future. At present, the absence of truth blocks any attempt at resolving social and political problems. The project will organise a workshop on the role of communication in the peaceful resolution of conflicts for the benefit of church communication personnel; three workshops (one in the capital, Bujumbura, and two in rural areas) focusing on exchange of information about social problems during which participants will testify openly with the aim of reaching an understanding of what took place in Burundi; and production of a video recording of all the workshops for use in other communities.
