Colombia

The Social Foundation for Integral Training (FUSFI) works for the social, economic and cultural development of communities and pays particular attention to gender perspectives. The district of El Pozón in Cartagena on Colombia's north coast is home to more than 50,000 people living in extreme poverty who have been displaced as a result of armed conflict. High levels of aggressivity and violence have resulted, as well as an increase in insecurity and crime. This has gravely affected young people who organize gangs that continuously confront each other and impact on the physical and emotional stability of their families and communities.

This project will facilitate the creation of a collective that will act to increase levels of living together in community using communication strategies to promote greater understanding and tolerance of shared problems and ways of addressing them. The project will train 100 young people to communicate changes of attitude using audiovisual media and stage arts, establish a community organization to foster peaceful resolution of conflicts and act as a focus for young people to learn and grow together to improve their lives and those of their neighbours. In particular, the project will produce a radio programme called 'Voices in solidarity for peace' and organize a film club and local talent shows which, together, aim to reinforce the torn fabric of El Pozón.
