Mexico

AMARC-Mexico brings under one umbrella the 12 radio stations that operate with licenses in indigenous, rural and urban zones. As a national network it defends and strengthens those stations in legal terms and through training and comprehensive management. In recent years it has stressed the need for social actors to work on mediation in situations of conflict, such as Oaxaca, or where there is a high incidence of organized crime. Various factors have contributed to a social crisis within the country: ungovernability and insecurity in some places, an increase in drug- trafficking, profound economic inequalities, and continuing violation of human rights under a blanket of impunity in the face of justice. There are communities in which conflict has destroyed the social fabric and others where there is still a chance of avoiding conflict. This situation emphasises the need to work alongside community radios to create spaces for dialogue that will help build peace.

This project aims to elaborate a manual on mediation and non-violent conflict-resolution for use by community radio stations. The local impact will be to offer public dialogue about alternatives to violent confrontation and a space for airing and discussing problems and solutions. The overall impact will be to strengthen the capacity of community radio stations as agents of mediation in social conflict and as advocates of non- violence.
