Peru Guarango is a small association of Peruvian film and video makers working with communities affected by transnational mining. It has already produced two award-winning documentaries. The current project to write and publish a book will communicate the inspirational stories of women and men in Peru and other southern communities who have developed innovative methods of non- violent resistance to confront the global mining industry and preserve their land and environments. Mining has failed to bring the economic prosperity that local communities were promised. In Peru, despite a billion-dollar metals industry, more than 50% of the population live in poverty. In response, vibrant social movements have sprung up from the grassroots and mining communities are demanding a say in their own development. Unfortunately, the mainstream media either ignores or misrepresents these groups, portraying them as ignorant victims manipulated by foreign NGOs or violent extremists. Guarango will publish the book in Spanish and English versions detailing these people's stories, including testimonials and photos. Print copies will be distributed in Latin America and the project will have a bilingual web page. English copies will be distributed in North America and the UK. Beneficiaries include mining communities in Peru and Latin America, activist groups, educators, and community media. By putting human faces and dramatic, emotional stories on the issue, the project will inspire and motivate populations and groups in conflict over natural resources.
