Organization: Espoir Vivre Ensemble Association des PVVIH (EVE) Country: BENIN Despite the development of HIV and AIDS and its enormous socio-economic consequences, HIV and AIDS remains a taboo subject in the land-locked communities of Benin. Even in school institutions, considered to be places of education and information, the topic is not often talked about. Students and teachers are under-informed and often adopt risky behaviours (due to the lack of information and education), and that exposes them to the virus.
At the rural community level, the situation is even worse. HIV and AIDS remains a taboo issue and somebody else's problem. And yet it is within these 'ignorant' communities that stigma, discrimination and rejection are most seen. That's the reason why the Association of PLWHA (EVE), aware of the situation and aiming at achieving its objectives, would like to respond to this situation by implementing this project. EVE will inform, educate/train and fight against stigmatisation, discrimination and rejection in order to develop and facilitate a better communication among the infected and affected persons, their families and the entire community.
The topics to be tackled are: the lack and insufficiency of information for PLWHA on HIV and AIDS; communication and stigmatisation; little involvement of teachers in the fight against HIV; poor information for students; poor information and lack of involvement of women leaders of rural groups in the fight against AIDS; ignorance of rural communities in the face of effects caused by HIV and AIDS-related stigma and discrimination.
The activities to be carried out include: the capacity-building of 30 PLWHA (15 women and 15 men) in strategies and communication tools so that they can play the role of psycho-social counsellors regarding the fight against stigma and discrimination and the training of 40 teachers (20 women and 20 men) of village school institutions in communication skills and in the use of communication tools for a better HIV and AIDS-awareness-building in schools.
