BENIN

Development efforts undertaken by Benin leaders run the risk of being undermined by HIV and AIDS if nothing is done. The global HIV and AIDS rate of prevalence is 2% in Benin with a strong disparity in every social stratum. This rate is 10.3% with people belonging to the traditional religion.

Women are more affected than men. AIDS patients are often stigmatised and marginalised because they are considered to have disobeyed the gods and are therefore cursed by them. They are consequently rejected and abandoned and unfortunately some of them manage to infect other people before they die. This project has the ambition to contribute to the change of vision, mentality and behaviour by strengthening the capacities of leaders of the main traditional religion in Benin, namely voodoo, that covers more than half of the country's population.

Actions to be undertaken will aim at reducing the spread of HIV and the stigmatising and discriminatory behaviours within the believers of the voodoo religion; work towards the respect of PLWHA's rights and gender equality through capacity-building; develop and distribute advocacy messages to leaders of this religion and to women.

FNDH will organise an advocacy campaign targeting voodoo leaders and local authorities; training sessions for convent leaders and women on the causes, manifestations, consequences and ways of prevention of HIV and AIDS; advocacy and communication training sessions for behaviour change; training for convent leaders and women on stigma and discrimination and PLWHA's rights; elaborate 26 with beneficiaries messages of sensitisation against stigma and discrimination; and broadcast messages of sensitisation on local radio and TV stations.
