Organization: Fondation Solidarité Familiale « FOSOF ASBL

Country: REPUBLIC OF CONGO

In FIZI, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC),HIV and AIDS are considered shameful and consequently people living with HIV and AIDS and the women in particular are stigmatized and discriminated against. Subjected to moral judgment, they also self-stigmatize which aggravates their discomfort and increases the spread and harm caused by the pandemic. Stigma and discrimination persist despite the adoption of a law in 2008 upholding the rights of PLWHA. The project challenges stigma and discrimination through advocacy with key influencers in the community and through training for people living with HIV and AIDS. The project will enable radio broadcasts of testimonies on positive living, including creating awareness about laws that protect the rights of people living with HIV and AIDS. The project is implemented by Fondation Solidarité Familiale, a not-for-profit organisation created by rural youth to organize rural communities experiencing social distress to exercise agency over their own lives. Among other outcomes, the project is expected to result in increased capacity in the community and among people living with HIV and AIDs to counter stigma and discrimination - including self-stigma.
