Organization: Asociacion Colectivo Mujeres al Derecho. Colemad Country: COLOMBIA Asociación Colectivo Mujeres Al Derecho (COLEMAD), Colombia, works in a context where news are centred on internal armed conflict, corruption, the political elite, urban criminality and the human rights crisis. The mass media generally do not discuss women in public life and when they do, women are objectified or presented as passive subjects. The project plans to transform the image and treatment of women in mass media, especially in news media, by promoting a change in perceptions and attitudes of news producers as well as those of news consumers. The project is expected to result in more inclusive media, including the development of a progressive media culture that acknowledges women as active participants in society. The project is implemented by COLEMAD, a women’s rights association created in 2003 by young female university students concerned about the social, economic and political processes the country was undergoing and how these processes were affecting the most vulnerable majority, most of whom are women and children.
