Colombia
Created in 1996, the Colombian Charter of AFROAMERICA XXI - (National
Federation of Non Governmental Organizations for the Development of Afro
Colombian Communities) is part of the continental network of people of
African descent throughout the Americas. The coalition was born as a result
of the Inter American Development Bank's commissioned study 'Poverty
Alleviation in Minority Communities in Latin America for Communities of
African Descent.' The project seeks to address the 'invisibility' of the
people of African descent - Afro Latin Americans - while making visible
their cultural, socio-political and economic demands. It will use
audiovisual and written communication training to empower Afro Latino
leaders in three countries: Bolivia, Colombia and Honduras. The leaders
trained will be responsible for reproducing knowledge and know-how among
their own communities in order to help them develop their own identities
and to try and generate strategies of work and advocacy efforts at all
levels. The activities planned are divided into three stages: training,
development of strategies and advocacy aimed at governmental level and the
international communities. The project includes the purchase of equipment
for groups in the three countries of intervention. The impact of the
project will be a more positive image of the communities of Afro descent
and a better understanding of their demands and needs.
