The new technologies of communication and information are an essential tool at the moment, in the State of Yucatan, these media are controlled by a group of industrialists linked to the government who manipulate the information that goes out to the population, in such a way that the indigenous communities continue to be misinformed and alienated. This is a strategy that benefits the political parties and the capitalist consumption. The opening of cyber-cafés does not respond to the disinformation problem, since all are private and their unique objective is to generate gains promoting trivialities such as pornography, selling electronic internet products and electronic games. For this reason, the Mayan group ‘El Jornalero de Ticul’ created this project for the construction of a community tele-centre aimed at students, indigenous people and organized groups, generating a space of encounter and exchange of experiences to solve the problems of the community. The activities of the project will consist of workshops on using computer software, the tele-centre will be turned into a reading room addressing human rights issues and will eventually become a communications network with other organized groups throughout the state and the country. The aim is to give a social and collective approach to mass media and information. Contact: Profr. Russell de Jesús Peba Ocampo
