Democratic Republic of Congo: Awareness-Building among Young People about Democracy and Peace, International Women's Movement for Democracy and Development (MIFED) Print E-mail

Democratic Republic of Congo

The International Women's Movement for Democracy and Development (MIFED) works to mobilise all sectors of the Congolese population, particularly young women and men, to join the process of reconstructing the country and consolidating peace. This project seeks to tackle the question of how to make young people aware of the need to participate as citizens of a country emerging from a long period of armed conflict. It will contribute to a change of attitude through information and training in making television programmes on the themes of strengthening peace, affirming rights while respecting the rights of others, the value of work, education, and respect for the environment.

The project will produce and broadcast a series of 48 programmes about peace, democracy and citizens' participation; identify and work with different groups to participate in televised discussion forums; and in partnership with other organisations hold awareness-building sessions in schools about civic practice and establish discussion groups in schools and universities. The project is aimed in particular at young people as well as the general population and its impact will be measured in terms of offering young people a space for self-improvement through training and self- expression through the medium of communication.
