Promoting Communication for Social Change
Taking Sides
Regional: Communication is Peace: Building Viable Communities in Asia, WACC - Asia Regional Association Print E-mail

Regional

Global society is beset by contradictions unprecedented in previous times. Social inequity and other forms of injustice, militarization, racism, oppressive policies, violations of rights and transgression of fundamental freedoms are resulting in growing social unrest and a culture of violence. There is a need for people-initiated social alternatives: community- managed, justice-making social experiments designed to bring about peace. And this whole process is a schooling in, and cultivation of the values of peace by citizens acting together and in wisdom.

With the aim of developing a thrust towards communicating for peace, WACC's Asian Regional Association (AR-WACC) hold its Pre-Assembly Seminar on this theme to clarify what peace is not and what communicating for peace is all about. The project aims to strengthen communicators within the Asia region as communicators for peace, providing them with an understanding the framework and context of conflict. The project aims to address the following: deficient media coverage and analysis of issues and concerns affecting peace; obstacles to creating viable communities for peace; and the role of communicators as agents for peace-building. The seminar will be a stepping-stone in the build-up to WACC's Congress 2008.
