Promoting Communication for Social Change
Taking Sides

Argentina

This project promotes the struggle against violence by means of a campaign aimed at the community of San Nicolás in the province of Buenos Aires to make people aware of the problem in public and private life. The topic of violence in the family comes up against obstacles in the community where the myth is still current that it is a private matter. In general, society rejects violence against women but does not wish to get actively involved in the struggle, reserving its criticism for violence against children and old people. For that reason this project seeks to address the problem in a way that will gain greater social support and commitment and, at the same time, lead to better results.

The project focuses on prevention by taking a positive view of what the community can achieve together. It consists of educational, informational and recreational activities aimed at different social institutions in the city as well as schools. It will be carried out by trainers and communicators who will use video, puppets, huge mobile displays and workshops aimed at children and adolescents to draw attention to the campaign and its principle of fostering greater sensitivity and non- violence within the family.
