Tools for Fighting Stigma among People Affected By HIV and AIDS in Northern Uganda |

Organization: Entebbe Women Association (EWA) Country: UGANDA Misconceptions about HIV and AIDS, as well as negative associations with the disease’s transmission, make stigma and discrimination a major challenge in fighting the AIDS pandemic. Many people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) are socially excluded, often leading them to internalise stigma and have low self-esteem. Eliminating stigma and discrimination against PLWHA and clarifying the myths surrounding HIV and AIDS saves lives. This is the second phase of a project implemented by the Entebbe Women’s Association (EWA), a non-profit organisation that works for the benefit of the underprivileged and poor. The project works with internally displaced persons (IDPs) and PLHWA in 7 divisions of Gulu in Northern Uganda where the prevalence rate of HIV and AIDS is acute. The project will increase the integration of issues concerning PLWHA in policy advocacy and lobbying. It will increase community involvement in caring for PLWHA and encourage openness to discuss reproductive health norms, including HIV and AIDS, within families and schools. The project ultimately aims to reduce stigma and discrimination among those infected and affected by HIV and AIDS focusing on IDPs and to create awareness on HIV and AIDS prevention, care, support, treatment and rights.
