Bridging the Media Divide in East Africa, Eastern Africa Sub-regional Support Initiative for the Advancement for Women (EASSI), Uganda. Negative portrayal of women in print media in East Africa is coupled with misinformation on gender issues and consistent gender insensitivity. There is also considerable misguided information which leads to stereotypical attitudes towards women from readers, especially the youth. The situation is further compounded by the use of women and girls to advertise consumer goods and promote sexual gratification. EASSI, a sub-regional civil society organization established in 1996 to facilitate systematic follow-up of the Beijing Platform for Action has designed this project to build the capacity of media practitioners to transform their portrayal of women in print media to become more positive and objective. The project seeks to launch the idea of the need for policies, guidelines and codes of conduct for gender-sensitive media. The project seeks to train media practitioners on gender-sensitive reportage and influence the development and adoption of gender-sensitive policies and guidelines. Expected results include publication of policy guidelines and codes of conduct for media, and broadly, gender-sensitive media in the East African Community.
