Organization:
Appropriate Communication Techniques for Development (ACT)

Country:  EGYPT

Alternative Media to Fight Violence against Women in the Media, Appropriate Communication Techniques for Development (ACT), Egypt. While media coverage of women's issues is increasing, this coverage is seasonal and only appears when incidents, such as sexual harassment, occur. There is an evident lack of deep awareness of women's issues among the public. Dialogue between journalists, media professionals and supporters of women's issues necessary to create positive interaction and achieve fair coverage is absent. An alternative medium to convey concepts of equality and present women as capable human beings is needed. The project developed by ACT-Egypt will produce a film that exposes this lack of awareness. The film will be screened for journalists in events organised for important days such as the International Women's Day (March 8), International Day against Violence against Women (November 25) and International Human Rights Day (December 10). Public debates will follow each screening and a press conference with journalists will discuss biases in media coverage in order to generate public opinion in support of issues of concern to women, at the same time challenging media practices that present such issues in a distorted manner and violate women’s rights. ACT is a non-governmental organisation working on gender and combating violence against women. ACT coordinates the Arab Network for Monitoring the Image of Men and Women in Media active throughout the Middle East and North Africa region.
