Press release

March 05, 2010: The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today called on media owners to take steps to raise women's profile in the news, both as professionals and as news topics.

The IFJ says too few women have so far reached leadership positions in media houses. An IFJ survey covering the Middle East and the Arab World to be released on 8 March in Bahrain found that despite scores of universities and journalism schools female graduates, women continue to lag behind men in the region with regard to access to leading roles in the newsroom and in the unions.

By Sarah Macharia, Programme Manager for Media and Gender Justice, WACC

New York, March 2, 2010:There is a gender angle to every story’ is one of several arguments underscored at an animated panel discussion and open debate during which the preliminary report of the Fourth Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP 2010) was launched.

The event took place in New York on the occasion of the 54th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). Moderated by Ms. Joanne Sandler, Deputy Executive Director of UNIFEM, the panel was one of a handful during the CSW parallel sessions focussing specifically on ‘women and the media ‘ – Section ‘J’ of the Beijing Platform for Action. As such, the event was highly anticipated by participants for whom Section ‘J’ remains a crucial concern in spite of the dwindling interest shown in this theme by international policy makers.

The Ecumenical Jury at the 60th Berlinale awarded its Competition prize to Bal (Honey) directed by Semih Kaplanoglu (Turkey/Germany, 2010). The International Jury also gave the film its coveted Golden Bear.
A splendid portrait of the poet as a young child, Bal tells the story of the blossoming of the sensibility in a rural boy, Yusuf, living in the highlands of northeast Turkey. Immersed in a forest of overwhelming beauty, Yusuf´s life points to a connection with nature that provides not only material subsistence but spiritual learning, highlighting issues such as family love and involvement in the community. Bal invites us to go deeper into this forest, on a journey that mirrors the human soul seeking the ideals and people with whom we want to
share life.

Montreal, February 10th, 2010. From March 8th to March 31st, The Women's International Network of the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC-WIN) will organize the 6th annual International Women’s Day Broadcast Campaign. The theme of this year is “Empowering and celebrating women as agents of recovery”. The Webcast will begin at 1:00 am GMT on Monday March 8. To listen the multilingual programs visit our website: http://march8.amarc.org

AMARC WIN believes that women can be active agents of recovery from disasters. Yes, they are victims and survivors just like anyone else in communities hit by disasters. However, they can also take on leadership roles in leading their countries and communities towards recovery and long-term development. Given the opportunity and necessary support, women can participate in assessing the damage and loss; organize medical, health and psychosocial services; coordinate aid distribution and ensure that the most needy are reached; establish and maintain communication networks for survivors and their families as well as disaster management workers; among many other crucial tasks.
