By the Creative Centre for Communication and Development, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe
 | | “ I have read stories in magazines about how computers can make communication easy but I had never imagined that a day will come when I could sit in front of a computer and learn about its mysterious operations. I only thought that computers were for big businesses such as banks and chain stores”. Lindiwe Dube, 48, had always believed that information and communication technologies are for those leading a sophisticated life. Living in a community where even local schools do not have computers, Dube’s beliefs were reinforced by the sad reality that none of her five children had ever used a computer. |

| The media landscape in Cameroon changed significantly after media liberalization in the 1990s brought an end to the monopoly of State-owned media. Since then, a plethora of community and rural radio stations has emerged leading to an increase in diversity of news content and to better access to information among both rural and urban populations. Increased use of national languages in broadcasting has been one of the benefits of this changed media landscape.

|
|
