02 Jun 2020 ‘An end to violence can never be achieved by further violence’

WACC condemns the callous brutality that caused the death of George Floyd and led to the growing waves of civil unrest in the USA. WACC is dismayed by the disproportionate and excessive response of many authorities against peaceful protestors, and the incendiary language and total lack of moral leadership by the US president.  

In an editorial opinion today, The New York Times says, “This country has failed to provide one of the most fundamental protections in the Constitution: the right to life.” It has also failed to protect journalists, who are now suffering vicious attacks by the police simply for doing their job in a democratic society.  

WACC adds its voice to many other international organizations gravely concerned for the country’s civil liberties and future peace. An end to violence can never be achieved by further violence, but by guaranteeing respect and dignity for all. Communities everywhere should encourage all people to voice their concerns, to be heard, and to work together for solutions that help build sustainable and peaceful societies.
