07 Jul 2014 Asia Pacific Conference on Alternative Radio Journalism and the Advancement of Migrants’ Rights
China
The Asia Pacific Mission for Migrant (APMM) is a Hong Kong-based regional organization that promotes and protects the rights and welfare of migrants in the Asia Pacific and Middle East regions through advocacy, mobilization and collaboration with regional partners. It assists migrants in the region to develop their capacity through establishing their own self-help groups, advocate for their rights and wellbeing and develop a strong solidarity and cooperation among migrants of different nationalities as well as nationals in the host country. APMM organized a knowledge-sharing and information-exchanging conference that brought together radio journalists from organizations based in Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Lebanon, India, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Philippines and the United States, whose programs focus on the rights, welfare and concerns of migrants. As a result 60 radio journalists and broadcasters advocating for the right of migrants, including migrants themselves, developed strategies and best practices to address issues of political repression among migrants and journalists. They agreed resolutions and action plans. A mapping of migrant-sympathetic radio journalists and media practitioners was also agreed. A workshop on radio broadcasting for both Indonesian and Filipino migrant workers in Hong Kong took place attended by 10 participants (2 Filipino men, 4 Filipino women, 4 Indonesian women) some of whom later submitted contributions to digital radio programmes in Hong Kong.
