Communication and Poverty
Bolivia
In the course of 12 months Cabildo Indigenal succeeded in establishing a recording centre, training 15 young indigenous communicators, and recording two cassettes in the local language of the community. The training workshops included the theory and practice of communication, hands-on practical experience, editing, and basic studies in cultural psychology. Nine of the project’s beneficiaries came from the local indigenous community. The others were born in the city of Trinity. Three of the women participants expressed interest in continuing their studies and arrangements are being made to offer them scholarships to study at the Autonomous University of Beni. The project has succeeded in drawing attention to the need for wider recognition of the local indigenous culture and its language. In this way it has contributed to greater understanding and a better way of life for the local indigenous people. As a result they can now count on their own means of communication among themselves and with the wider population which should enable them to improve the sometimes difficult situation in which they live.
