Recognizing and Building Communication Rights
Benin
One of Benin’s most disadvantaged groups, deaf people, has been empowered by their active participation and inclusion in the work which culminated in the production of communication materials and the development of a sign language manual which takes into account the country’s diverse social and cultural context. The sign language of deaf people in Benin has been enriched considerably with the inclusion of many new ‘words’ which arise from disabled people themselves and which actively reflect their needs and communication practices.
