Just Digital course now available in French and Spanish

French and Spanish speakers have a new resource for living justly and working for justice in our digital world.

WACC has launched “Just Digital” in French (Justement Numérique) and Spanish (Justamente Digital) to help even more individuals and groups navigate wisely online and advocate effectively.

The fun, self-directed e-course equips learners with core digital literacy skills. WACC created the course with support from the Association of Protestant Churches and Missions in Germany (EMW) and the World Council of Churches (WCC).

Big issues in small bytes

In three engaging sessions, “Big Issues in Small Bytes,” Level 1 of Just Digital, introduces learners to key concepts related to digitalization and gives perspectives from global experts.

Participants learn quick tips and actions they can apply as Digital Justice Champions to protect their data online, recognize and deal with fake news, and exercise the right to freedom of expression responsibly.

Each of the sessions – “Cookies are never free,” “Don’t take me for a fool,” and “What can I say? My rights, your rights” – takes under an hour to complete. After finishing Level 1, learners are recognized as Digital Justice Champions.

Integration of French- and Spanish-language resources on digital justice

WACC Deputy General Secretary Sara Speicher said the launch of French and Spanish editions of the online learning resource aims to help more individuals and communities around the world to be informed users and advocates for digital justice.

“More than ever before, we can see the necessity of understanding the communication ecosystem that touches everything – what happens online has offline impacts,” she stressed. “We need to go beyond learning to use digital tools to getting familiar with the related ethical issues and how to address them.”

To this end, Justement Numérique and Justamente Digital have been developed on the basis of Just Digital with input from French- and Spanish-speaking members of the WACC network and feature communication rights experts and case studies from related contexts.

“Just Digital shows that there is a fun way to apply ethics to our use of digital tools, and its expansion with French and Spanish editions further highlights the wealth of perspectives and expertise in different regions of the world.”

Ongoing collaboration to support digital justice advocacy

The Just Digital collaboration builds on the international symposium “Communication for Social Justice in a Digital Age” organized by WCC and WACC in September 2021, with co-organizers EMW, Bread for the World-Germany, the Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland (Protestant Church in Germany-EKD), and World Student Christian Federation.

A second level of the Just Digital course, “Take Control, Make a Difference,” will launch later this year with a focus on advocating effectively.

“I am very grateful for this ongoing collaboration with WCC and EMW that continues to offer new learning resources to a global audience,” Speicher said.

Registration for Just Digital is available for a modest fee, which supports the development of further digital justice resources. Members of WACC can request a code for free access to the e-course.
