Capacity Building among Community Radio Audiences

Burkina Faso

The region of Boulgou in Burkina Faso suffers from a lack of infrastructure and of means of communication and information. This affects the ability of the local population to generate income and develop their resources. Pag La Yiri (formerly ‘The Association of Women of Zabré) created in 1975 groups upwards of 10,000 women and men in three provinces. Their community radio station serves mainly the agricultural community and the radio clubs in the different villages. The project developed a series of radio programmes by ‘village reporters’ covering the local markets and prices as well as news and events in each village. Radio listeners clubs have reduced the distance between the radio and the population, allowing it to access useful and important information such as the prices of agricultural products. The population, and in particular the women, have become more active and more directly involved in the development efforts of their locality. The permanent availability of up-to-date agricultural information allows the beneficiaries to improve the commercialisation of their agricultural products thus contributing to the betterment of the community.
