Communication Needs of the Regional Network of Young People with Disabilities

Recognizing and Building Communication Rights

Guatemala

The Regional Network of Young People with Disabilities from El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua did not have access to a technological system to facilitate the speedy and up-to-date exchange of information between its members. If disabled young people are to participate as full citizens and active members of the societies in which they live they need information in formats and ways suitable to their special needs such as sign languages, Braille system, audio books, special screen readers, the Jahus programme, etc, all of which facilitate and enable easy access to information and communications and strengthens the network and relations with other groups in civil society. The project included purchase of equipment, training, the creation of a database and a web page, and the production and distribution of news bulletins. As a result of the project 100 young people in the three countries with intellectual, visual, hearing and physical disabilities have acquired information communication technologies and have access to knowledge that was previously outside their reach. The database allows young disabled people to connect and network and the young people’s network has now its own space in ASCATED’s main webpage. The project has resulted in the strengthening of the whole network.
