Generating Capacities for Society to Build a Culture of Peace

Communication for Peace

Peru

Paz y Esperanza (Peru) organized training workshops for local journalists, many of whom lacked formal training but all working on issues of social justice and peace-building. Themes includes ethical journalism, human rights, the power of information, journalistic responsibility, access to information and the use of new information and communication technologies. One workshop was dedicated to producing radio and television programmes with a focus on ethics and values and aimed at building citizenship through responsible communication. A forum workshop with citizens took place that explored their rights as consumers of media and which resulted in a citizens’ media observatory. This group will reflect on the importance of a media watchdog function in relation to participatory democracy and to placing media accountability on the public agenda.
