29 Sep 2014 Giant Peace Dove Media Campaign
Communication for Peace
Tanzania
During the period of the project, UWAFI conducted a training session on ‘women build peace’ with participants from the UWAFI Network (UN) of women activists from around Fizi; and an exchange visit with leading human rights organizations in Uvira for 10 women from the network to exchange information on approaches to peace advocacy and women’s rights. In addition, it carried out educational work in schools, workplaces and communities, supported local women’s groups to distribute Education and Action kits in schools and to speak out on issues of public policy and women’s human rights. It encouraged them to speak about the problem of violence against women. UWAFI organized three Peace Day picnics in local communities and flew doves of peace with pride. It also organized painting of ‘peace murals’ and displayed them in front of the churches, mosques and schools and attached them to fences. Altogether, 12 groups painted murals for the Giant Peace Dove Media Campaign. The combination of activities provided a way for people to rethink how to live peace. The workshops and presentation sessions helped to overcome differences among local communities. The campaign was a coalition of community organisations from 3 villages and influential individuals committed to fostering a culture of non-violence in the community. The message reached 24 places of worship in the territory and 12 schools in the immediate vicinity.
