Communication to Defend their Rights
In Colombia, violations of the rights of people living with HIV and AIDS, especially regarding health care provision and access to medicines, has received little media attention. To counter this Comunicación Positiva trained 30 leaders among people living with HIV and AIDS from 12 cities to use new digital media, community communication and positive HIV and AIDS communication. It produced at least 30 case-studies of people discriminated against in regard to their communication rights, produced a toolkit to train activists, set up a database of organizations working on HIV and AIDS, and produced 6 radio programmes with audience participation on themes related to human rights and HIV and AIDS. Indirect beneficiaries of the project include community groups working on HIV and AIDS, families and friends of people living with HIV and AIDS, and the broader community. The project increased awareness of the infringement of rights of people living with HIV and AIDS and of people’s communication rights. Through networking, activists supporting people living with HIV and AIDS linked with other initiatives throughout Latin America.
