The Transforming Word: Media Involvement in Poverty Alleviation

Communication and Poverty

India

Pipal Tree promotes participatory governance that helps community leaders and people’s organizations solve problems related to poverty alleviation, human rights and environmental action. This project aims at engaging the vernacular media in the state of Karnataka in creating pro-active awareness about implementing the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), a government programme to reduce poverty by providing 100 days of guaranteed employment to each rural household. The project will publish 36 articles in regional newspapers and journals with a readership of several millions, as well as on the Internet and in book form, about how better implementation of the NREGS can contribute to poverty alleviation, environmental regeneration, and empowerment of the rural poor, including women. Its longer term aim is to build citizen support for more vigorous implementation of the NREGS. The project will also create awareness for the need to develop mitigation and adaptation strategies in the context of climate change.
