16 Apr 2026 WACC Latin America organizes for communication justice rooted in regional values and beliefs
WACC’s Latin America region gathered for a member’s meeting on 20 March in the context of the 3rd Juntanza Festival for Communication from Our America.
The aim of the meeting was to rethink the regional association’s path and renew its leadership, who take on complex challenges amid an adverse global context that also serves as a stimulus to continue working for a Latin America with greater justice and a good life for all.
Members reflected that it is a crucial time for the region; therefore, they envision spaces for deep reflection, active participation, and future visions oriented toward the common good.
The WACC Latin America members’ meeting elected a new Regional Executive Committee (REC), trusting in servant leadership that enhances the talents of each REC member, the region’s membership, and allied organizations.
The new REC includes representation from all the Latin American subregions – Andean, Brazil, Southern Cone, and Mesoamerica – and maintains a gender balance.
Elected for the 2026–2030 term were:
- Vilma Peña, as President, Mesoamerican region
- Hemersson Díaz, as Vice President, Andean region
- Magali Cunha, as Treasurer, Brazilian region
- Héctor Tecum, as Secretary, Mesoamerican region.
- Néstor Manchini, as Member-at-large , Southern Cone region
- Tania Villalva, as Member-at-large, Andean region
The newly elected REC committed to convening a meeting of members and, within a maximum of 60 days, presenting a regional work plan that meets membership expectations and takes into consideration continuity with previous actions and transition with the outgoing REC (2022–2026).
Among the priority actions and challenges identified during the members’ meeting on 20 March:
- Recovery of beliefs and principles that inspire WACC-AL
- Design of an integral communication strategy
- Coordination of joint actions and initiatives
- Recovery and reconnection with membership (in-person and virtual)
- Attraction of young people
- Mapping of associated individuals, organizations, and regional alliances
- Pursuit of new alliances
- Securing local resources
- Measurement of impact for existing and future projects
- Innovation in how the organization works in the region
- Alignment with WACC Global’s five thematic areas (digital justice, migration, Indigenous rights, climate justice, and gender justice) while addressing regional needs
- Overcoming internal organizational issues so REC members can fulfill their responsibilities
The new WACC Latin America REC invites all members in the region to keep alive the spirit of dialogue and fraternity from the Festival Juntanza and to actively participate in the call within 60 days, when the new committee will share the roadmap for regional work in the next five years.
The meeting closed with the call to keep walking together for the right to communication and for a region with greater justice and a good life for all.

WACC América Latina se organiza por la justicia comunicativa basada en los creencias y valores regionales
La región de América Latina de la WACC se reunió el 20 de marzo en el marco del 3er Festival Juntanza por la Comunicación desde Nuestra América.
El objetivo de la reunión fue repensar el caminar de la asociación regional y renovar sus liderazgos, quienes asumen desafíos complejos ante un contexto mundial adverso, pero que, a su vez, representa un estímulo para seguir trabajando por una América Latina con mayor justicia y buen vivir.
Los miembros reflexionaron sobre el hecho de que se trata de un tiempo crucial para la región; por ello, prevén espacios de reflexión profunda, participación activa y visiones de futuro orientadas al bien común.
La reunión de miembros de WACC América Latina eligió un nuevo Comité Ejecutivo Regional (CER), con confianza en un liderazgo de servicio que potencie los talentos de cada integrante del CER, de los miembros de la región y de las organizaciones aliadas.
El nuevo CER – equipo voluntario – cuenta con la representación de todas las subregiones que integran América Latina: Andina, Brasil, Cono Sur y Mesoamérica, manteniendo un necesario balance de género.
Para el nuevo ciclo 2026-2030, las personas electas son:
- Vilma Peña, presidencia, región mesoamericana.
- Hemersson Díaz, vicepresidencia, región andina.
- Magali Cunha, tesorería, región brasileña.
- Héctor Tecum, secretaría, región mesoamericana.
- Néstor Manchini, vocalía, región cono sur.
- Tania Villalva, vocalía, región andina.
El CER tendrá la tarea de convocar una nueva reunión y presentar, en un plazo máximo de 60 días, un plan de trabajo que cumpla con las expectativas de la membresía, evaluando la continuidad de las acciones anteriores y la transición con el CER saliente, (2022-2026).
Entre las acciones y retos prioritarios detectados, destacan:
- Recuperación de creencias y principios que inspiran a WACC AL
- Diseño de una estrategia de comunicación integral
- Articulación de acciones y quehaceres conjuntos
- Recuperación y reconexión con la membresía (presencial y virtual)
- Atracción de personas jóvenes
- Mapeo de personas asociadas, organizaciones y alianzas de la región
- Búsqueda de nuevas alianzas
- Consecución de recursos locales
- Medición de impacto de los proyectos existentes y futuros
- Innovación en la forma en que la organización trabaja en la región
- Alineación con las cinco áreas temáticas de WACC Global (justicia digital, migración, derechos indígenas, justicia climática y justicia de género) manteniendo las necesidades regionales
- Superación de problemas de organización interna para que quienes integren el CER, puedan cumplir con sus responsabilidades
La nueva CER de América Latina de la WACC invita a la región a mantener vivo el espíritu de esperanza, diálogo y hermandad del Festival Juntanza y a participar activamente en la próxima convocatoria dentro de 60 días, espacio en el cual el nuevo comité y personas colaboradoras, compartirán la hoja de ruta para este ciclo.
La reunión concluyó con el llamamiento a seguir caminando en conjunto por el derecho a la comunicación y por una región con mayor justicia y buen vivir.
