WACC Asia elects new board, plans renewal of regional work

WACC’s regional association in Asia is poised to renew its work to promote communication rights following a fruitful and engaging 3-day meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka, at the end of November.

Participants outlined five areas of activity for WACC Asia moving forward:

  • Addressing the denial of the communication rights of migrant and marginalized plantation workers in Sri Lanka by creating alternative media that promote social justice and human rights
  • Using media to raise awareness of the rights of refugees and migrants, in particular undocumented people on the move
  • Advancing women’s rights and gender justice and communication
  • Analyzing dominant communication methods and creating alternative media using songs and stories
  • Developing community radio programming focused on social justice and human rights

New WACC Asia board

During its business session, WACC Asia members elected a new Regional Executive Committee (REC):

  • Peter Singh (India) as president, representing Tamilnadu Theological Seminary, Madurai
  • Soonim Lee (South Korea) as vice president, representing Olive Tree Production
  • Trudy Bandara (Sri Lanka) as secretary, representing National Christian Council of Sri Lanka
  • Aaron Ceradoy (Hong Kong) as treasurer, representing Asia Pacific Mission for Migrants
  • Gulom Mourtoza (Bangladesh) as member-at-large
  • Vincent Rajkumar (India), as WACC Global Director for the Asia region, representing Christian Union of India

The REC plans to meet in-person every six months, with the next gathering tentatively scheduled for June in South Korea and a second meeting later in the year in India.

The region also is aiming to launch a membership campaign and strengthen fundraising efforts.
