Webinar to explore churches’ roles in misinformation and disinformation

A webinar co-organized by WACC and the World Council of Churches (WCC) on 5 December will explore how churches can seek and serve the truth in the age of social media and digital communication.

The virtual event “Seeking and serving the truth? What role do churches play in misinformation & disinformation?” at 13:00 (CET) will focus on how churches have been involved in the spread of misleading and inaccurate news — and what more they can do to prevent this in the future.

Participants will learn about the ways fake news is spread. Through case studies and investigative journalism, panelists from Brazil, Kenya, the Philippines, and the USA will share about the reality of disinformation and misinformation and its impact. WACC Deputy General Secretary Sara Speicher will moderate the discussion.

The webinar will also provide a basis for future engagement of the churches and ecumenical partners on this topic.

The December 5 webinar is supported by the German Federal Foreign Office and builds on previous joint work by WACC and the WCC to promote digital justice, such as the September 2021 international symposium “Communication for Social Justice in a Digital Age.”

Interpretation to Spanish, French and Arabic will be provided. Please register to participate.
